Touring SMRSA

The South Monmouth Regional Sewerage Authority offers guided treatment plant tours to all local  high schools, community groups and environmentally conscious individuals to educate how the water we use from nature is cleaned and safely returned to the environment.

Visitors see the various ways pollutants are removed from wastewater–replicating nature’s own processes, but in a condensed time frame. They also see how wastewater solids are processed so that they can be beneficially re-used, and how energy is recovered through The SMRSA Co-Generation System.

General Information

  • Tours are free, however, reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.
  • Tours last between 90-120 minutes beginning with an orientation video and ending with a question-and-answer period.
  • Tours guides are managers and operators of the plant who provide a thorough, systematic explanation of wastewater treatment.
  • There should be one teacher/chaperone for every 10 students.
